Benefits of Building a Basement

This is a collaborative post

Basements are usually part of the building that is either partially or completely beneath the ground, depending on the number of floors it has. A basement has the ability to become a second living space or an office space for you. In commercial buildings, basements are generally used for parking and other services such as air handling and heating units. But in a residence or a private property, a basement is a storage room for electrical facilities or even an entirely new extension to your home.

Instead of building up or building sideways, you can build into the basement and using companies such as R&C Groundworks, you can excavate beneath your home to build something amazing. It’s not an easy venture to build a basement into your home, so you do have to plan accordingly. Initially, basements were created as a storage base for water, wine, and food because it’s cooler underground. But these modern conveniences are great for home owners that want to build an extension but don’t have any more land space to go sideways. Here are some of the advantages and benefits of building a basement for your home.

  1. More space. If you’re expanding your family, or if your family is just big enough as it is, you may want to have extra living spaces, extra bedrooms, or even an extra space to put in your kitchen. Basements are created by excavating out the ground, so when you create a basement under your house, you get a large space for extra activity. There’s always permission needed for how far deep you can dig, and you also have to consider that you have to get round plumbing and electricals as well. There are more ways in which you can use the best space in the basement rather than just for storage purposes these days, and it’s usually a quiet place so it can be a great space for a hangout for kids. If you’ve got teenagers, then creating what is essentially a studio apartment under the house is a good way for them to have their own independent space while still living under your watchful eye.
  2. It’s easy to repair. Having a basement is a great way to provide utility services such as electrical wires, pipes, breaker panels, water heaters and infuse boxes in one area. If any of these get damaged or destroyed, you can access the basement and easily make the fix.
  3. They are energy efficient. Basements often don’t have the ability to allow in any kind of light, which means that the hot, scorching sunlight in the summer won’t have a way to get into your basement. This gives you somewhere cool to hang out without spending all of the money on your air conditioning.
  4. Improves your property value. If you’re hoping to be able to sell your property in the coming years, then being able to build in a basement can help you to up the value of the home and sell it for more later. You can generate a minimum of 50 to 80% return on your investment, which is huge for a house, but it all depends on the quality of the materials, the finish and the size of the space.
